Osteopathy Treatment - For Muscles, Bones and Joints Pain

During my recent visit to Brussels (Belgium), I happen to come across and visited one Osteopathy clinic for rectification of not only my knees' pain but also from short and disturbed Sleep since long. My experience to visit for Osteopathy treatment was quite satisfactory and I feel lot of relief towards the settlement of  my above problems which I now wish to share.

Osteopathy is a recognised health profession distinct from nursing and pharmacy. Its regulation works the same way as regulation for doctors. It is regulated by law in 13 countries Osteopathy (a unique form of medical care) treatment was founded upon,by Dr. Andrew Taylor in 1874, sustained by the laws of nature. Nature needs no help, just no interference. An Osteopath aims to restore normal functions and the stability of joints to help the body heal itself. They use their hands to the body in different ways using a mixture of soft and forceful techniques (to muscles, ligaments)  which are based on the condition and symptoms reported by the patient. Soft tissue release help the drainage of toxins and bringing in nutrition to the area to aid healing. It can also result in reduction of overall stress and anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.

Sports medicine is also a natural outgrowth of osteopathic practice because of its focus on musculoskeletal system, its manipulative treatment, diet, exercise and fitness. Its practitioners are in primary care areas such as pediatrics, general practice, internal medicine and gynecology.

It is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints. Based on the principle of the power that made the body, heals the body. The process of Muscle relaxation have a range of benefits which includes reduced stress, pain relief, relief from high blood pressure, migraine, low back pain, anxiety and better sleep.

Main difference between Osteopathy and Physiotherapy is that osteopaths treat with their hands whereas physiotherapists treat using exercise and modalities, area specific. Osteopaths considers that the body has its own healing mechanism.

While practicing progressive muscle relaxation, folowing tips can also be very helpful -

Set aside half an hour for this exercise. Wear comfortable clothing, breathe deeply while doing in a quiet and comfortable location Make it a point to practice when you are feeling calm. Focus your attention to the following -

1. Forehead : - Squezze the muscles in your forehead, holding for 15 seconds. Feel the muscles               becoming tighter and tenser. Then, slowly release the tension in your forehead while counting for 30 seconds. Notice the difference in how your muscles feel as you relax. Continue to release the tension till your forehead feels completly relaxed. Breathe slowly and evenly.

2. Jaw :- Tense the muscles in your jaw holding for 15 seconds. Then release the tension slowly counting for 30 seconds. Notice the feeling of relaxation and continue to breathe slowly and evenly.

3. Neck and Shoulders - Increase tension oin your shoulders by raising them up towards your ears and hold on for 15 seconds. Slowly release the tension by counting for 30 seconds. Notice the tension melting away.

4. Arms and Hands :- Slowly draw both hands into fists. Pull fists into your chest and hold for 15 seconds squeezing as tight as you can. Then slowly release while counting for 30 seconds. Notice the feeling of relaxation.

5. Buttocks - Slowly increase tension in your buttocks for 15 seconds. Then, slowly release it over 30 seconds. Continue to breathe slowly and evenly.

6. Legs :- Slowly increase the tension in quadriceps (group of muscles at the front of thigh) and calves over 15 seconds. Squeeze the muscles as hard as you can. Then gently release it by 30 seconds. Notice the tension melting away and feel the relaxation that is left.

7. Feet :- Slowly increase the tension in your feet and toes. Tighten the muscles as much as you can. Then slowly release the tension counting for 30 seconds. Continue breathing slowly and evenly.

With time and practice, you will be able to perform this process to quickly have a feel of passing through your body. In rare cases, serious complications arise as to tearing of artery wall leading to a stroke casusing permanent disability.

To conclude, Osteopathic principles could be the body possess self regulatory mechanisms that are self healing in nature, the position of a body structure decides its form and function. Through non-invasive technique one can relieve chronic pain. After the treatment, it is normal that symptoms may become worse before they become normal and actual relief may be felt within a week.

I am thankful to Dr. Kenza Berkaine, Osteopathic D.O. of Uccle- Lasne- Nivelles, Brussels for her consistent support to me.
