Power centres - Chakras -in the body

Chakras have recently become well known, with the growth in popularity of Yoga. They were first mentioned in Vedas, ancient sacred texts of spiritual knowledge dating back to 1500 to 1000 BC.

Our body has 114 chakras out of which 7 chakras advancing alongside the spine are thought as the main energy points in the body. Each of these seven main chakras has a corresponding number, name, color, specific area of spine from the sacrum to the crown of head and health focus. These chakras symbolize energy centres xorrepond to a bundle of nerves, major organs and areas of spiritual body that impact our physical and emotional well being. To function at their best, these chakras need to stay open or balanced. If they get blocked, one may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra. These seven chakras run along spine. They start at the root of spine and extend to the crown of head.

These seven chakras are -

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara) - located at the base of spine. Provides a foundation for life, helps one feel grounded and    able to face challenges. Root chakra is responsible for sense of securiy and stability.

2.  Heart Chakra ( Anahata) - located in the center of chest, near heart. It is not a surprise that it is all about ability to love and show compassion.

3. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) - located in throat. has the ability to communicate verbally.

4. Crown Chakra ( Sahasrara) - located at the top of head. plays a role in life's purpose.

5.Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) - located between eyes. Responsible for intuition and imagination.

6. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) - located in stomach area. Responsible for confidence, self- esteem as also feeling well in control of life.

7. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisgthana) - located just below belly button. Linked to creative energy, self  emotions as also of others.

When a chakra is low in energy, one will have difficulty expresing the particular qualities associated with that chakra. When a chakra is overactive, qualities are dominant force in the person's life. Can have both physical and emotional effects.
