Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy refers to an umbrella term which results when nerves carry to and from the Brain and Spinal cord from and to the rest of the body are damaged or diseased. The peripheral nerves make up an intricate network which connects brain and spinal cord to the muscles, skin and internal organs. 

The major factors that cause Peripheral neuropathy symptoms include - 

1. Diabetes

2. Vitamin deficiency and poor nutrition.

3. Alcoholism

4. Hereditary and acquired neuropathies from external factors like illness, environment, trauma, accident.

5. Bone marrow disorders.

6. Kidney or thyroid disease.

7. Auto immune diseases.

8. Cancer and Chemotherapy.

Some of the major symptoms are - Numbness, Heaviness,Pain, tightening, Blood pressure, Constipation, Excessive sweating.

In order to manage peripheral neuropathy, care of feet is a must especially when patient is diabetic. Regular exercise such as walking three times a week can reduce neuropathy pain. Improve muscle strength, control blood sugar levels, quit smoking. Treatment relies mainly on the cause of nerve damage. For example, peripheral neuropathy caused by vitamin deficiency can be treated and reversed by vitamin therapy and improved diet. 

Peripheral neuropathy develops very much on what causes it happen. Injuries can develop instantaneosualy or within minutes or hours. Toxic and inflammation based forms may develop rapidly over days or weeks, while other conditions take months, years or even decades to develop.

    The most common tests for peripheral neuropathy - to confirm or rule out - include:

1. Blood test. 

2. Nerve ultrasound.    

3. Nerve Biopsy.

4. MRI

5. Genetic teasting

6. Electromyogram. 

Following treatment methods are most common for Peripheral Neuropathy -

1.Physical Therapy.

2. Medications.

3. Syrgery.

4. Foot care 

5. Wearable equipment , Devices.

6. Otherpain treatments like accupuncture, implant a spinal cord stimulator.

Peripheral neuropathy is usually not dangerous, but it can have disruptive effects on life. More nerve it effects, greater the potential effect.
