Chronological age and Biological age
Aging is the main risk factor for vascular disease and ensuing cardiovascular events, a leading cause of death worldwide. It is essential to develop early life biomarkers in a aging population which identify individuals who are at high risk of developing vascular damage. Strategies to extend life and health span require understanding of individual differences in age-dependent functional decline which is known as Biological aging. Due to the complex nature of age-associated changes in the arteries, there are different parameters relating to vascular aging which can be measured. RNA biomarkers can be effective indicators of biological processes by using profiling methods.
Choronological age is the legal age one has lived. It is the age one has lived from date of birth to a certain date, so as to count on the same parameter. Biological age, a natural process is the accumulation of damage to cells and tissues caused by over activation of immune system in the body. It is more a helpful way to assess the healthiness of a person as one ages at different rate.
The disease risk factors increases with the choronological age alongwith decline in physical and mental functions. The rate it occurs differs strongly from person to person. This is due to the number of factors that occurs through the aging process such as lifestyle, genetics and environment. Agreeing on a single measurement for biological age is more complicated than counting years.
Measuring Biological age should be able to detect individuals who are at risk before they develop a. syndrome. It should generate realistic measurements which are within limits of a specified lifespan. It should predict age related biologicals and functional results more effectively than chronological age.
The factors adversly effecting the Biological age are - Lack of exercise and physical activity, unhealthy diet and other health conditions like diabetes, depression, hypertension etc. If Biological age is already far ahead of the Chronological age one can lower the Biological age by leading a healthy lifrstyle. Stop smoking, take alcohol in moderation, reduce soda consumption, follow exercise, eat a balanced and healthy diet, good sleep, use sunscreen.
