Prevention is better than cure - A myth now

The phrase - 'Prevention is better than cure' attributed to the Dutch Philosopher Erasmus (around 1500 AD) is a fundamental principle of modern health care strategies. This phrase was made at the time when probably treatment was based on experiences and treatment available at that time. Lot of Articles can be found to say that prevention is better than cure which has become a myth at present. What will happen to the patient, in case even after taking prevention, problem remains? Patient has to be taken up for with proper care.

In the present day scenario, it has become a myth. Patients go for treatment to hospitals only after they consider it necessary since all the preventive measures followed does not give desired results. They go there with the confidence that they will get proper care and, of course, treatment. In medicine, every disease is not curable but in most cases, good care is more effective. For the patients, 'care' is at least as important as 'cure'. Unbelievable but rare it is found in successful cases.

Care is something other than cure which means a change. Cure, though desirable, if goes out of care can easily become violent, manipulative and even destructive. Care is being crying with, suffering and feeling with, for the truth that the patient is my wife, mother, sister, brother or for that matter a close relative. While care is first concern, cure be a gift. If we are not able to cure, care is our first duty. To care is to be human, cure comes later. In this connection, I give a brief of my observation which proves to be a glaring example of carelessness.

It has been heard quite often that some Senior Doctors knowing well the case history of the patient during consultations, prior to getting the patient admitted for the surgery, do not conduct surgery themselves rather prefer to guide the trainee doctors to do so in OT where nobody is allowed inside except these so-called Doctors. While carrying out the surgery, in case some artery gets cut off or error is committed, it is for the patient who has to suffer at the cost of his/her health or even life. In case, any serious mishap occurs, they blame the Patient's past medical history, age factor or any excuse for getting them safe way out for which  hospital take gives them safe coverage for such action. It is clear sign of negligence and poor governance. Moreover, they already have lawyers to contest the case, if in any case, anyone goes to court.

As a Doctor, it is a fact that they cannot cure every patient of every condition, be it cancer, depression, heart failure. But that does not mean that they should not care for them as a person. This declining trend, creeping in hospitals is going to prove disastrous in the medical system of India, if not checked  in time.

Govt. is taking all out necessary steps to bring in more meaningful effectiveness of healthcare systems. It should make it mandatory and authorize outside agency to conduct surprise checks in the hospitals so that public should not be a victim and hospital keeps on making money by adopting such practices.
