The Secret of Creativity

Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be repeating the same patterns forever.

The secret of creativity thinking is to start with good problems. Then you need to turn those problems into thought provoking challenges. After that, great ideas will also invent themselves.  Almost every creative idea is a potential solution to the problem. The secret of creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Creativity is no longer seen as what artists and musicians process.  It's a crucial skill for professionals in all fields. Boosting the creative thinking can help, by shifting perspective on what researchers know, which can ultimately point to novel problems to focus on. But first, researchers need to acknowledge their creative potential and engage in activities that can help them fulfill their potential.

While creativity in the Lab can yield new ways of thinking about the problem, innovation can create new ways of solving it. In some cases, this may lead to a patentable idea or product, similar to the technology innovations we are familiar with today.  When we are doing something creatively what is actually active in our brain. It turns out that parts of the brain that we use in 'business as usual' thinking are totally switched off when we are being creative, whereas other parts of our mind that we do not use everyday are quite active. The medial prefrontal cortex show increased activity during improvisation and lower activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

While no one can exactly define what creativity really is and how it happens, the most profound theories of creativity which can be divided into following four stages:

1. Preparation - Inspiration can come from anywhere, it usually begins with wonder and curiosity. As human beings we are curious creatures, and want to know how the world works. We search for meaning, and when we don't get it, we try to create it. Creativity is about transformation, going from the initial stages of inspiration, all the way to your final place of genius. There are no limits here.

2. Incubation -This stage is the one where you might actually want to go for a walk and stop consciously thinking about the problem you are trying to solve. By letting your mind wander in this way leads to greater creativity.

3. Illumination - Dim illumination heightens perceived freedom from constraints, which in turn improves creative performance.

4. Verification - At this stage, you evaluate, analyze and build on your idea - to make sure that it's an novel and useful idea. If it meets the user's needs defined at the preparation stage - and, if so, polish it as needed.

So, Imagination is everything. It's the preview of life's coming attractions. Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. We cannot solve the problem with the same thinking we used when we created them. You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. No doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. The creative person is willing to live with ambiguity. He doesn't need problems solved immediately and can afford to wait for the right ideas.
