Role of Opposition in Democracy

A parliament is by its nature not a monolithic and homogeneous institution, but a representative assembly, where the basic idea is that different ideas and interests should be represented, and where there is differences of opinion, and always a distinction between the majority and one or more opposing minorities. In modern Parliaments this is organised along political party lines, with the basic distinction running between the governing party (or parties) and the opposition parties that are represented in parliament.

'Freedom dies when criticism ends' the quote sufficiently highlights the role of criticism in a democratic setup to sustain liberty in a democracy. A democracy without opposition is dangerous for the society as a whole thus attributes a significant role for effective and efficient functioning in any democracy. There is no uniform pattern of opposition that can be seen in democracies worldwide which leads to difference in opposition behavior across the world.

The opposition's main role is to question the Government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. This also helps to fix the mistakes of the Ruling party. The opposition is equally responsible in upholding the best interests of the people.

To conclude:  Understand -

Great spirits have always encountered with violent opposition from mediocre minds. Because friends ask you questions, enemies question you.  In mature and stable democracies, with traditions of political tolerance, opposition can thrive without legal guarantees, while in other political systems, opposition may be restricted even if it enjoys high degree of formal protection. Opposition works in two ways, one is the negative role which criticizes the working of Government, another is by assisting the existing government in working by implementing laws and policies. Evolved model of opposition rests only on convention and no constitutional status has been given to it. As Winston Churchill quote -" A Kite flies against the wind, not with it." When you start experience opposition, your power is growing.
