Understanding Democracy

The word Democracy has a Greek origin. 'Demo' means people, while 'cracy' means 'power'. Winston Churchill once said ' Democracy is the worst form of Govt. except for all those forms that have been tried from time to time'. Although not perfect, democracy aims to bring the most benefits to the most number of people. These are -

1. Promoting equality.

2. Protecting the interests of citizens.

3. Preventing abuse of power.

4. Creating stability.

Democracies are peaceful, representative and terrible at boosting economy. The strength of a democracy depends upon the economic and political freedom of its citizens.

Democracy has also been criticized for a different number of reasons. Some of the most common are -

1. Not everyone exercise their right to vote.

2. Not everyone has the right to vote.

3. Not everyone who votes is well informed.

4. Delays in the process of changing laws and making decisions.

5. There is still a risk of corruption - Once someone is elected into power, there are no guarantees they won't use that power for personal gain. They may not follow the promises to execute prior to their election.

For young people, democracy can seem like a great system where anyone's voice can be heard, though it might be frustrating if you aren't of voting age.

Demerits of Democracy -

1. It sometimes leads to establish the majority view the majority view over the minority view.

2. Does not encourage individuals to give their opinions.

3. Party leaders and political office holders in government control the citizens and the members of the party.

4. Expensive form of Govt. because elections have to be conducted periodically to various office.

5. Difficult to prevent corruption and malpractices.

6.  Known as government by amateurs and lead to domination of masses.

7. Decision making process is slow as it involves long debates and deliberations in Parliament.

8. Self interest is the most common and majority of people is unwilling to subordinate to the general will of the community.

The world has been experimenting with so many systems of government, but no other system could satisfy the basic needs of the people. So, democracy has been accepted as the best form of government where a man can enjoy equality, freedom and liberty. Freedom of speech is a human right and the foundation upon which democracy is built. Any restriction of freedom of speech is a restriction upon democracy.
