Manage Distraction Using Meditation

In the modern world, meditation is a word that has come to be used loosely and inaccurately. That is why there is so much confusion about how to practice it. People use the word meditate when they mean thinking or contemplating, others use it to day dreaming or fantasizing. However, meditation is not any of these.

Meditation is a precise technique for resting the mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state. We can fathom all levels of ourselves and finally experiencing the center of consciousness within. It is a science, not a part of religion means that the process of meditation follows a particular order, has definite principles and produces results that can be verified.

Very little of mind is cultivated by our formal education system. The part of mind that dreams and sleeps - vast realm of the unconscious which is the reservoir of all our experiences - remains unknown and undisciplined, it is not subject to any control. Except for the practice of meditation, there is no method to truly develop control over the totality of mind.

Meditation can be a tricky affair at times because mind tries its best to distract you from meditation. It takes time, discipline and making mistakes before you feel you've mastered the skill. Our concentration, though improving gets interrupted by thoughts and images from even far- flung corners of our consciousness.

The more you go in meditation, the more you become free from conditioning of the mind. The hold of mind on you becomes less as your mediation deepens. It is not only the mind, at times even the body might not cooperate with you. All this is common in meditation. In fact, whether you walk on spiritual path or in the materialistic world, distractions and obstructions are always there. You have to overcome them to achieve success.

It is important to have an object of meditation, something to focus on. Most commonly and traditionally, the object of meditation is our breath. Either by counting your breath or simply keeping track of the air entering and exiting your nose, or the rise and fall of your abdomen, this is what will keep you focused. So, when a distraction arises -whether it is a sound, thought, feeling or smell - simply be mindful of it and go back to the object of meditation. Always remember that it's natural for the mind to think. Label each thought with a word such as 'thinking' or 'planning' and then gently invite the attention back to your breathing.

Decide how long you are going to practice mindfulness meditation and stick to it. Take the meditation moment by moment and see what unfolds. You spend all your life trying to get somewhere and achieve something. Meditation is a special time for you and let go of all that and just be in the moment. As well as requiring patience, meditation develops it.

Begin with how long you can manage and build it up, step by step. The most important thing is to keep at it, practice as regularly as you can, and gradually increase the time you can practice for.

I have practiced this system and getting better results and improved concentration.
