Essentials for India becoming a Super Power

A Super Power is a state with dominant position exercised by its extensive ability to exert influence or project power on a global scale. This is done through the means combined of economic, military, technological and cultural strength as also the diplomatic and soft power influence. Russia, France, UK, USA and and China are often referred as great powers due to their Economic and Political dominance of the global arena. These five nations are the only states with veto power on UN Security Council.

Today Indians are hoping like never before that the country is on the verge of a great turnaround. Because it remains a fact that God gives you nuts but does not crack them for you. It is also difficult to brush under the carpet a fact that Indians have great brains. Therefore, we on our own, can produce atomic bomb, created enormous telecom infrastructure and a mark in the software. There are few must-haves without which India story may not happen. These are -

1.  Punctuality - Disrespect for time runs right from top to bottom. Worse is, we           are not even ashamed of it, and mock ourselves by chanting about 'Indian               Stretchable Time'. Thus, we miss our deadlines, deliveries and deliverables               which is not acceptable in a competitive world.

2.  Discipline  -  This is something which we don't have in us. We do not like doing       things right and we are fond of breaking rules. We don't respect law and we             don't care about it. This reflects in our work culture, our social behavior, which       effects our productivity quotient.

3.  Responsiveness - It starts with picking up phone and answering a call and also         begins with responding to a missed call - all about responding to a request.               How do we demonstrate sense of responsibility which needs immediate                     attention.

4. Perfection and Excellence - Excellence and precision are a part of mindset. It          reflects in the etiquette, personal life and the workplace. We need to go a long          way to achieve this. Cosmetics won't do and a complete overhaul of mindset            where 'Sab Chalta Hai' is at the centre of our social conscience. To many                  Indians, it is a shortcut to Nirvana, but for a competitive India, which hopes to        become a Super Power, this mantra will not do.

5. Sense of Commitment and Ownership - If a job is given to anybody then it is his       responsibility to ensure that it well done and on time. Great nations are built by       people and not by Leaders alone.  Though Managers are responsible to run the        show, every Supervisor and Worker takes ownership of his task. This needs to        be built not only in our work culture, but also a part of our day-today life -              needs to be built  in our DNA.

6. Entitlement Attitude - We thrive on these and want more of them. We want              rights, our entitlements, subsidies, reservations but shy away from                            responsibilities. In recent times, new mantra of empowerment is being mixed up      with entitlement.

We hope to supply man power to the world, dream of exporting teachers when we ourselves face a huge shortage of capable, committed workforce that can deliver.

We make a mistake when we link our achievements and attitude to the date of attaining independence. Our attitude developed over a long period of time, which could back several centuries in the past. To demolish this legacy will not b easy. It can only happen if this becomes a national priority.

Here are five ways India can become one of the most powerful country in the time to come -

1) Ensure implementation of Laws an Acts -  India government has been fighting a losing battle when it comes to implementing and enforcing the laws they create. Apart from understanding the difference between making promises and  carrying them out, not just during elections but also otherwise, India needs to realize that a 'Welfare state' ensures that its claims and jurisdiction covert to action and implementation.

2) Redefine Development - While setting up smart cities, industries, power plants and mines may be essential for the growth of economy, and to provide access to facilities to the ever growing population of India, the human and environmental cost of this development needs to be considered before making decisions.

3) Practice Equality - India is the fourth worst country in the world when it comes to religious intolerance. Lot of unrest and riots are caused due to people being divided into the 'exploiters' and 'exploited'. Country cannot progress if its own people are divided and fighting each other, instead of going against the already existing evils like poverty, illiteracy, environment destruction etc. Only when the focus shifts from working against one another in working for something bigger, will India develop - on all fronts.

4) Prioritise basic necessities of its citizens - Prioritising the well being of people also necessitates the reduction of corruption and sensitisation about privilege. The deep divide between the privileged and under privileged is not something that will aid success.

5) Embrace science and facts - Acknowledging lack of awareness (regarding science, issues like environmental degradation and global warming) and working towards increasing it is a better strategy than refuting the mere possibility of India being wrong in one of its stances due to its rich heritage and culture.

If India really wants to become a super power, it can do so only by understanding and enforcing points as mentioned above. Recalibration of priorities and putting people's welfare ahead of capitalist gains will go a long way in creating a sustainable and steady super power out of India, rather than a short- lived one.
