Crippling Hand Pain - Symptoms And Treatment

Hand pain is more than just annoying. The stiffness and swelling that go along with hand pain can sap strength and diminish the ability to carry out routing functions like Buttoning clothes. One common cause of hand pain is Osteoarthritis - when the shock absorbing cartilage between the
bones in the finger joints and at the base of the Thumb becomes worn or damaged. Hand pain can also result from Nerve conditions, like the pain and tingling you feel when there is pressure on the median nerve in the Wrist or the Ulnar nerve near the Elbow. Sometimes hand pain results from Tendinitis, an inflammation of the Tissue that attacks muscles to the Bones.

Here are six methods to help manage hand pain, retain hand function and avoid surgery. These nonsurgical solutions will enhance daily activities and independence.

1. SPLINTING - A Splint - a strip of rigid material for supporting and immobilizing a broken bone when it has been set, for a few weeks. It stabilizes the position of fingers, thumb or wrist.if arthritis flares, to settle the inflammation.

2.  NSAIDS - A non Steroidal anti - inflammatory drug (NSAID) helps relieve hand pain by blocking Enzymes that produce pain and swelling. It is not effective for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (a common condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand - the Median Nerve - is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist). Long term use of oral NSAID e.g. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are linked to ulcers, stomach bleeding, liver and risk of heart attacks. Topical NSAIDS  e.g.
Diclofenac (Voltaren) may be of less risk.

3. INJECTIONS - An injection of Corticosteroid in a joint can reduce inflammation. The relief it provides can last up to one year.

4.  HEAT AND COLD - Heat can loose hand stiffness. Cold is effective for hand pain resulting from
activity like - playing Golf. Apply it in the form of flexible Gel pads kept in the freezer or bags of
frozen Corn or Peas which conform well to three dimensional complexities of the hand.

5. STRETCHES AND EXERCISES - These focus on your hands' muscles and tendons. A physical therapist can guide through exercises to stretch and strengthen the nuscles which can help absorb the stress on joints in the hand and reduce pain.

6. CAPSAICIN CREAMS - It can be made by adding 2 to 3 Sprinkles of Cayenne Pepper to 2 to 3
tea spoons of Olive oil and applying to the hands. Do not use on broken skin or skin with a cut. Avoid touching eyes and mouth after using this method. It can cause pain and burning.
